The DRS-HeavyLift from Drone Rescue Systems (Austria) is a reusable parachute system for heavy multicopters and heavy-lift UAV with a maximum take-off mass between 25 and 250 kg. The canopy is sized to the aircraft; the system is controlled through MAVLink or PWM.
The rated value is the upper limit of 250 kg take-off weight. The weight of the system, the mass covered and the sink rate depend on the chosen configuration, because the canopy is dimensioned for the mass of the aircraft. At such large masses the sink rate is the decisive variable, since impact energy grows with the mass and with the square of the sink rate. Larger canopies also need more height to open.
Aircraft above 25 kg lie outside the EU classes C0 to C6 and the Open category; they are operated in the Specific category with a risk assessment (SORA) and an operational authorisation, or certified. A recovery system can reduce the ground risk there, but the evidence of its effect, for example to ASTM F3322 or EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512, is tied to the specific combination of aircraft and parachute. The system weight counts towards take-off weight and rises with size.
For selection, the configuration is agreed with the manufacturer on the real take-off weight including payload and on the desired sink rate. Reusable means: after every deployment, canopy, lines and attachments are checked for tears, chafing and moisture and repacked as the manufacturer specifies. The MAVLink or PWM link belongs in the ground function check before use.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
