PTO (power take-off)
The power take-off (PTO) is the rotating shaft at the rear (occasionally the front) of a tractor that drives mounted implements such as mowers, mulchers or slurry tankers - the engine supplies not just pulling force but also rotary motion for the attached tool. In German it is called Zapfwelle, in Polish WOM. Common speeds are 540 and 1000 revolutions per minute, and many tractors let the operator switch between them depending on what the implement requires. When buying, what matters most is whether the available PTO speed matches the implements you already own or plan to use, rather than the raw PTO horsepower figure alone. A missing PTO rules out many mounted implements immediately, so it is one of the first things worth checking on a used tractor.
Lifting capacity
Lifting capacity states how much weight the rear (or front) linkage of a tractor can raise, usually measured at the ends of the lower links. It directly determines which implements can be carried safely at all - a plough or a heavy counterweight that exceeds the lifting capacity cannot be lifted cleanly and upsets the tractor's balance. Manufacturers often quote it at two points: right at the lower link ends and across the full lift range, because the force actually available changes with lift height. When comparing two tractors it is worth checking whether both figures were measured the same way, since otherwise they are not directly comparable. When buying, lifting capacity should match the heaviest implement you plan to use, not just the average of your lighter, everyday jobs.
Linkage category
The linkage category (Cat 0, Cat I, Cat II or Cat III) describes the standardised dimensions of the three-point hitch connection points - the spacing and pin diameter on the lower links and top link. It is not a strength rating but a fit: a Category II implement will not mount without an adapter on a Category I linkage, even if the tractor is powerful enough. Smaller and mid-size tractors usually carry Category I or II, larger machinery more often Category III. When buying a used implement, it is worth checking the category against your own tractor before discussing price or condition. Adapter bushings exist but do not cover every combination and can themselves become an extra source of wear or play.
