OEM part number
An OEM part number (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is the unique identifier assigned by the original manufacturer to a specific component - it identifies the part regardless of how many different machine models it is fitted to. Unlike a general description ("oil filter"), the OEM number precisely pins down which exact component is meant, including its dimensions, connections and material specification. When buying a spare part, the OEM number is therefore more reliable than a description or photo alone, because it rules out confusion between similar-looking but technically different parts. Some parts are additionally offered by suppliers under their own number, linked to the OEM number through a cross-reference. On the model page, the OEM number serves as the starting point for a spare-parts enquiry, not as a guarantee that every supplier offers exactly the same part under that number.
Cross-reference
A cross-reference links several part numbers from different manufacturers or suppliers that denote the same or a technically equivalent component - for example the original equipment manufacturer's OEM number and a different number used by a supplier or aftermarket maker. It exists because many parts are not made exclusively by the machine manufacturer itself but by specialised suppliers, who sell the same component under their own number, sometimes to other customers as well. For spare-parts sourcing, a cross-reference is useful because it helps locate a part even when the exact OEM number is unknown to, or out of stock with, your chosen supplier. What matters here is distinguishing a genuine cross-reference (the same or a technically equivalent part) from a merely similar-looking substitute that does not necessarily share the same tolerances or materials. Reliable cross-references therefore ideally come from the supplier itself or from vetted trade catalogues, not from visual comparison alone.
EPA engine family
An EPA engine family groups together several engine variants that, under US Environmental Protection Agency certification, are considered technically equivalent for emissions testing - they share core features such as the combustion principle and exhaust aftertreatment, even if details like power output or calibration can differ. The engine family code usually appears on its own emissions nameplate on the engine and matters for customs and registration questions on import or resale. For parts sourcing, the engine family is helpful because it often covers several model years and power levels that used the same or very similar components. It is not, however, a substitute for the exact model or serial number when it comes to safety-relevant or tightly toleranced parts. On machines built for the US market, the engine family is usually found together with other EPA markings on the same label.
Operating hours
Operating hours count the time an engine or machine has actually been running - on tractors and construction machinery usually via an hour meter built into the dashboard, independent of distance travelled. They are often more meaningful than an odometer reading for working machines, because a tractor working a field at low speed can still accumulate high load and a lot of engine running time. A rough benchmark for "normal" annual use varies widely by operation and machine type, so serious comparisons rely more on maintenance records and overall condition than on a single expected annual figure. When buying used, it is worth checking the hour meter reading against the machine's visual and mechanical condition, since meters can be replaced or tampered with. Service books, maintenance invoices or workshop records are therefore an important complement to the raw hour count alone.
