The DRS-15R V2 from Drone Rescue Systems (Austria) is a universal, reusable parachute recovery system for medium multicopters of 10 to 15 kg. An electrically triggered catapult ejects the canopy, with no pyrotechnics and no CO2. Control is through MAVLink, PWM or a customer-specific interface.

The parachute is rated up to 15 kg take-off weight. Across the load range the sink rate rises from 3.6 m/s at 10 kg to 4.5 m/s at 15 kg, and the impact energy from 72 to 148 J; the rated value of 4.5 m/s therefore applies to full load, and a lighter aircraft descends more slowly. According to the manufacturer the opening takes place within 25 to 30 m, a distance value and not a guaranteed minimum deployment altitude. The system weighs 415 g and measures 172 x 100 mm.

For testing to ASTM F3322 and EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512, the manufacturer calls the system eligible; that is not an issued evidence of compliance. Anyone flying over people or in certain scenarios of the Specific category has to produce it for their own aircraft. As a universal kit, the system leaves it to the operator to substantiate the integration. The EU drone classes C0 to C6 end at 25 kg; an aircraft of 10 to 15 kg sits in the upper part of that range.

Because the catapult is electric and uses up no propellant charge, the system can be used again after a deployment. Afterwards canopy and lines are checked for tears, chafing and dirt, and the system is repacked as specified. For selection, the real take-off weight including payload decides; above 15 kg, sink rate and impact energy lie beyond the design. The link through MAVLink or PWM is tested on the ground before the first flight.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
