The DRS-Astro (Astro Max) from Drone Rescue Systems (Austria) is a reusable parachute system for the Freefly Astro and the Freefly Astro Max, multicopters of the medium class. It is connected through MAVLink. The ejection is described as an elastic catapult (sling-chute) without pyrotechnics.
The parachute covers two masses: a sink rate of 2.2 m/s at 3.2 kg (Astro) and 3.8 m/s at 8.7 kg (Astro Max), with impact energies between 8 and 63 J. The rated value of 3.8 m/s therefore applies to the heavier machine. The system weighs 490 g and measures 140 x 100 mm.
Certification to EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512 was announced for the third quarter of 2026. What counts is the issued evidence, not the announcement, and it matters as soon as flights go over people or in certain scenarios of the Specific category. A ready-made kit for the Astro is easier to substantiate than a self-made adaptation. The 490 g count towards take-off weight, and make up a larger share on the lighter Astro.
After a deployment, canopy and lines are checked for tears, chafing and moisture; the kit is repacked as the manufacturer specifies. Elastic parts of an ejection mechanism age and are checked or replaced as the manufacturer specifies. For selection, it matters which machine flies: the sink rate depends on the real mass with battery and payload, and the MAVLink link is tested on the ground before use.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
