The DRS-10R V2 from Drone Rescue Systems (Austria) is a universal, reusable parachute recovery system for medium multicopters of 5 to 10 kg. An electrically triggered catapult throws out the canopy, with no pyrotechnics and no CO2. The system is controlled through MAVLink or PWM; a customer-specific interface is also provided.

The parachute is rated up to 10 kg take-off weight. The sink rate rises with load from 2.2 m/s at 5 kg to 3.8 m/s at 10 kg, and the impact energy from 12 to 72 J; the rated value of 3.8 m/s therefore applies to full load. The manufacturer describes the opening as taking place within 20 to 30 m. That is an opening distance, not a guaranteed minimum deployment altitude. The system weighs 360 g and measures 140 x 100 mm.

The manufacturer calls the system eligible for testing to ASTM F3322 and EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512. That is a testing status, not evidence of compliance; for flights over people or in certain scenarios of the Specific category, the issued evidence is what counts. With a universal kit the operator has to substantiate the integration with their own aircraft, because ready-made kits for a given model are easier to substantiate than self-made adaptations. The 360 g count towards take-off weight.

Because the catapult is electric and uses up no propellant charge, the system can be used again after a deployment. Afterwards canopy and lines are checked for tears, chafing, dirt and moisture, and the system is repacked as the manufacturer specifies. For selection, the real take-off weight including payload decides: above 10 kg, sink rate and impact energy lie beyond the design. The MAVLink or PWM link is tested on the ground before the first flight.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
