Its immediate neighbours are the EH3500AC-3 below it with 2,027.2 hp and the EH 3500 AC - 2 above it with 2,053.1 hp. 357 Hitachi models across 24 series are on record.

Hitachi haul trucks EH 600 to EH 5000 – the Euclid heritage: mechanical up to EH 1700, diesel-electric AC-2 and AC-3, 286 to 2,240 kW, up to 326 t payload

The EH in Hitachi's haul-truck designations stands for Euclid-Hitachi: in 1994 Hitachi Construction Machinery took over the American truck maker Euclid of Cleveland, Ohio – the pioneer of the rigid-frame haul truck since the 1930s – first as a joint venture, fully from 2004. The Euclid R-series models became the EH trucks, built first in Guelph, Canada, today in Hitachinaka, Japan. The number roughly gives the payload class: EH 600 to EH 1100 are the quarry trucks of about 35 to 65 t, EH 1600 and EH 1700 the 100 t class, EH 3000 to EH 3500 the 150 to 190 t class, EH 4000 about 220 t and EH 5000 about 290 to 326 t. The suffix AC marks the diesel-electric drive with AC wheel motors that Hitachi adopted from its own railway technology, -2 and -3 the generations; the engine notes in brackets (MTU, C 23) name the engine variant.

The register lists 24 versions with 286.3 to 2,240 kW from six- to sixteen-cylinders of 14,001 to 76,301 cm³ – Cummins QSX15 and QST30 in the smaller, QSK50 and MTU 12V/16V 4000 in the big models – at rated speeds of 1,800 to 2,100 rpm, service weights from 50,000 to 348,000 kg, lengths from 8,041 to 15,493 mm, widths from 3,731 to 5,892 mm and heights from 3,600 to 7,240 mm.

The AC drive is Hitachi's distinguishing feature against Caterpillar's mechanical trucks: the diesel drives a generator, AC motors in the rear wheels provide propulsion and electric braking – less wear downhill, precise traction control, and Hitachi shares the technology with its trains.

Used, these trucks are mining capital goods; when buying, frame condition, overhaul history of engine and generator, wheel motors and rectifiers, body wear and the tyres, which cost six figures on the big models, are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
