The EH in Hitachi's haul-truck designations stands for Euclid-Hitachi: in 1994 Hitachi Construction Machinery took over the American truck maker Euclid of Cleveland, Ohio – the pioneer of the rigid-frame haul truck since the 1930s – first as a joint venture, fully from 2004. The Euclid R-series models became the EH trucks, built first in Guelph, Canada, today in Hitachinaka, Japan. The number roughly gives the payload class: EH 600 to EH 1100 are the quarry trucks of about 35 to 65 t, EH 1600 and EH 1700 the 100 t class, EH 3000 to EH 3500 the 150 to 190 t class, EH 4000 about 220 t and EH 5000 about 290 to 326 t. The suffix AC marks the diesel-electric drive with AC wheel motors that Hitachi adopted from its own railway technology, -2 and -3 the generations; the engine notes in brackets (MTU, C 23) name the engine variant.

The AC drive is Hitachi's distinguishing feature against Caterpillar's mechanical trucks: the diesel drives a generator, AC motors in the rear wheels provide propulsion and electric braking – less wear downhill, precise traction control, and Hitachi shares the technology with its trains.
Used, these trucks are mining capital goods; when buying, frame condition, overhaul history of engine and generator, wheel motors and rectifiers, body wear and the tyres, which cost six figures on the big models, are what count.
