The SafeAir for the DJI Mavic Pro from ParaZero (Israel) is a parachute recovery system from 2018 for a compact multicopter drone. It stops the propellers before deploying and releases itself on free fall or excessive tilt; the user can repack the parachute personally.

The key values: autonomous release without a pilot command, motor cut-off before the parachute opens, and a weight of 100 g. Stopping the propellers counts, because spinning propellers can damage canopy and lines; the aircraft then falls on the parachute. On an aircraft of this size, 100 g are a noticeable share of take-off weight. Where protection begins is set by the minimum height in the manufacturer's documents for the Mavic Pro: below it the aircraft flies unprotected.

The system dates from 2018, before the EU drone classes C0 to C6 came into force. Evidence to ASTM F3322 or EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512, which may be required for flights over people or in certain scenarios of the Specific category, has to be requested from the manufacturer for exactly this combination. The 100 g count towards take-off weight; for aircraft close to the 250 g limit (C0) or the 900 g limit (C1) that can change the classification.

Anyone operating an existing system inspects it more thoroughly than a new one: fabric and lines for tears, chafing, moisture and sticking, repacked after every deployment as the manufacturer's documents specify. Battery and electronics of the release sensor age faster than the fabric; function test and charge state belong before every use. The manufacturer's documents are the only reliable source for packing instructions and maintenance.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
