The SafeAir M350 Pro from ParaZero (Israel) is an autonomous parachute and flight termination kit for the DJI Matrice 350 RTK, a multicopter of the medium class. The SmartAir Pro computer detects the loss of control, shuts down the propulsion, sounds an alarm and opens the canopy, which is ejected ballistically. A hand-held release is part of the delivery.

The equipment: ballistic ejection, autonomous release by its own sensors and motor cut-off on deployment. That is the combination that counts for flights over people, because the system does not depend on the pilot. The hand-held release adds to it and does not replace the autonomous detection. For minimum deployment altitude, sink rate and system weight, the manufacturer's data sheet for the real loading of the Matrice 350 RTK applies; those values decide in which phase of flight the protection works and how much payload remains.

In connection with EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512, a Design Verification Report from EASA is mentioned; that is a report on the design and does not replace an operational authorisation. For flights over people or in certain scenarios of the Specific category, the evidence for the M350 version itself has to be produced, because evidence for the version for the predecessor M300 does not apply automatically to the M350. An ASTM F3322 evidence belongs in this check as well.

Ballistic releases can fall under their own transport and storage rules; shipping and storage follow the manufacturer's instructions. After a deployment the release unit and canopy are replaced or serviced, and the lines are checked for tears and chafing. The SmartAir Pro computer and the hand-held release belong in the function check before every use, and again after firmware changes to the aircraft.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
