The DropAir from ParaZero (Israel) is not a recovery system for the aircraft but an autonomous precision airdrop system: it releases load bags of 5, 10 or 20 kg under a late-opening parachute from heights of 20 m to 1 km. It connects through MAVLink, UART and RS232. As compatible platforms the manufacturer names the DJI M350 RTK, Elbit Thor, HEVEN H100 and StediCopter Black Eagle EUAS.

The drop height starts at 20 m and reaches 1 km; the 20 m is the lowest drop height and not the deployment altitude of a rescue parachute. The sink rate of 5 m/s applies to the 5 kg bag. A maximum take-off weight of the aircraft is not a meaningful measure here, because the parachute carries the bag, not the aircraft. The late opening keeps short the time in the air in which wind can displace the bag.

Dropping payload is an operation with its own risk assessment, in practice in the Specific category, and the drop zone has to be free of people. The standards for recovery systems (ASTM F3322, EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512) concern the protection of third parties when the aircraft crashes; a drop parachute has a different job, namely to bring the load bag to the ground in a controlled way. The operator limits of the aircraft remain unaffected.

For selection, the bag mass of 5, 10 or 20 kg and the platform the system flies on count. Autonomous means the drop happens without a pilot command; responsibility for the drop zone stays with the operator. After every drop, parachute, lines and bag attachment are checked for tears and chafing and repacked as the manufacturer specifies; the MAVLink, UART or RS232 link is tested on the ground before use.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
