The Gremsy Mio is a light three-axis gimbal from the Vietnamese maker Gremsy for mid-sized multicopters. It is meant for compact cameras up to 400 g.

Three axes compensate pitch, roll and yaw. The movement ranges are ±325° in pan, ±120° in tilt and ±40° in roll. The maximum payload of 400 g covers camera and lens together and should not be used to the limit. The gimbal weighs 240 g according to the manufacturer; with mount and cable the weight can be higher. It is controlled through USB 2.0, CAN, UART, S-Bus or PPM, and Bluetooth 4.0 is also present.

Gimbal and largest permitted camera together stay below 900 g, the limit of EU class C1; whether the whole aircraft lies below 250 g (C0) or below 900 g is decided by the total take-off mass, however. A camera that shows people recognisably makes operator registration necessary, and recordings fall under data-protection law.

With gimbals this small, vibration from the aircraft and a poorly balanced centre of gravity are a frequent cause of restless images; the camera is rebalanced before flight. Wear points are the small motors, the dampers and the connectors. Cables at the moving points must not chafe, and firmware is maintained to match the aircraft.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
