Valmet, part of the Finnish state engineering group Valtion Metallitehtaat, built field tractors from the early 1950s and was thus among the pioneers of the Finnish tractor industry; the range from 502 to 1102 follows a numbering logic Valmet used for decades, in which the leading digits rise with the size class. A marks four-wheel drive, Turbo the turbocharged version; Valmet's tractor business later merged into the Valtra brand, part of AGCO since 2004.
