Valmet 102 series (Finland) – the numbered tractors before the Valtra brand: 502 to 1102, A for four-wheel drive, three- and four-cylinder diesels of 2.7 to 4.2 litres, 36 to 75 kW, 2.6 to 3.9 t, 8.5 t gross

Valmet, part of the Finnish state engineering group Valtion Metallitehtaat, built field tractors from the early 1950s and was thus among the pioneers of the Finnish tractor industry; the range from 502 to 1102 follows a numbering logic Valmet used for decades, in which the leading digits rise with the size class. A marks four-wheel drive, Turbo the turbocharged version; Valmet's tractor business later merged into the Valtra brand, part of AGCO since 2004.

The register lists 6 versions with 36 to 75 kW from three- and four-cylinder diesels of 2,685 to 4,177 cm³ at 2,100 to 2,300 rpm, torque from 171 to 319 Nm, unladen weights from 2,557 to 3,900 kg, a gross weight of 8,500 kg, lengths from 3,460 to 3,930 mm, widths from 1,769 to 1,980 mm and heights from 2,400 to 2,710 mm.

The 102 series was the tractor of Finnish and Nordic farming with its cold winters and smaller farm sizes, also exported to Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, before Valmet became an international tractor supplier through the Valtra brand and its link-up with AGCO.

On used tractors, engine and cold-start equipment, clutch and gearbox, the four-wheel-drive clutch on A models, hydraulics and linkage, brakes and sheet metal and cab for rust from damp and road salt count; parts now run through the Valtra dealer network as the successor brand.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
