The Manitou MI 50 G US is a gas-powered forklift of class 50 and thus one of the larger versions in the MI industrial series. G stands for gas drive, US for the North American version. The figure 50 describes the load-capacity class and lies well above the smaller types of the series.

The truck suits firms where heavy loads are moved inside and outside halls without a diesel engine emitting exhaust in closed rooms. Typical are steel traders, precast plants and the paper industry, where reels and pallets have high individual weights. The gas cylinder can be swapped in a few minutes; waiting times for charging do not arise.

The larger build demands standing areas with high floor bearing capacity and sufficiently wide aisles. When inspecting a used unit, the gas system, ignition system, mast chains and fork tines are the main points. Given the high individual weights it is worth assessing wear on the lift-cylinder seals and brakes with particular care.

Manitou MI – industrial forklifts with diesel and gas power

The MI range is Manitou's line of industrial counterbalance forklifts. The maker from Ancenis, France is best known for rough-terrain forklifts and telehandlers; the MI series addresses the conventional forklift market. According to trade press, the range includes diesel and LPG models with capacities from 1,500 to 3,500 kg, with higher-capacity units reaching 6,000 and 7,000 kg. They use Powershuttle transmissions, hydrostatic steering and masts similar to those on Manitou's rough-terrain forklifts.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
