The Workswell WIRIS Pro Sc is a radiometric thermal camera from the Czech Republic for mid-sized research drones. It is designed for temperature measurement, including very hot targets, and brings an optical zoom.

The thermal image has 640 × 512 pixels. The temperature sensitivity is 30 mK. The camera is radiometric: every pixel carries a temperature value. The measuring range runs from −25 to +1,500 °C, with the upper limit reached only with an external filter; the accuracy is ±2 °C or 2 %. The zoom is 10x optical and stabilised. The unit weighs less than 450 g.

Thermal cameras with a frame rate above 9 Hz fall under the EU Dual-Use Regulation (2021/821); an export can require a licence. Images of people and property fall under data-protection law, and the operator must be registered. The weight counts towards the take-off mass of the aircraft, whose EU class limits are 900 g (C1), 4 kg (C2) and 25 kg (C3 and C4).

Anyone measuring very hot targets needs the external filter: without it the measuring range ends earlier, and data above that point is not valid. The accuracy of a measurement depends on emissivity, distance and atmosphere; in research, reference surfaces and careful calibration are part of the method. Wear points are the zoom mechanics and the connectors; front windows are cleaned only with suitable agents, and the filter must stay clean and undamaged.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
