The Workswell WIRIS Agro is a thermal camera from the Czech Republic for drones in agriculture. It is meant for mid-sized multicopters and outputs the water stress index CWSI (Crop Water Stress Index) for crop stands.

The CWSI describes how strongly plants suffer from lack of water; it is derived from the stand's temperature relative to reference values and therefore requires a temperature measurement, not merely an image. The sensor resolution for the CWSI is 640 × 512 pixels. The temperature sensitivity is 30 mK. The zoom is 10x optical and damped against vibration. Anyone comparing the resolution with thermal cameras from other makers watches for the same measured quantities, because sensitivity and resolution are comparable only between like definitions.

Agricultural flights mostly run over fields and not over people; data-protection law still applies as soon as people or property become recognisable, and the operator must be registered. The payload counts towards the take-off mass of the aircraft. Thermal cameras above 9 Hz frame rate fall under the EU Dual-Use Regulation, and an export can require a licence.

The CWSI delivers comparable maps only if flight time and weather fit: clouds, wind and sun position shift the temperatures, so flights should take place under conditions that are as even as possible. The lens and the zoom lens are kept clean, and the gimbal motors and dampers are among the wear points.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
