The Molicel INR-21700-P42A is a high-power round cell in the 21700 format from Molicel (E-One Moli Energy Corp.), a maker based in Taipei, Taiwan. It is intended for small FPV drones with high current demand and is regarded as the predecessor of the P45B. The format 21700 stands for 21 mm diameter and 70 mm length.

The cell stores 4,200 mAh at 3.6 V nominal voltage. That gives 15.1 Wh per cell (nominal voltage times capacity), at 230 Wh/kg and at most 70 g. The current is 45 A, which is 10.7C, calculated from current and capacity; at that current the cell is empty after about six minutes. How much margin that leaves in a pack depends on how many cells share the current: in a series string every cell carries the full pack current.

Six cells in series (6S1P) come to 90.7 Wh and so stay below the IATA limit of 100 Wh for spare batteries in passenger flights. Lithium cells must meet the tests of UN 38.3 for transport and are packed protected against short circuit. Joining cells into a pack belongs in a specialist workshop with test and protection equipment.

Anyone planning anew compares the P42A with its successor, the P45B, which offers more capacity at the same current. In use, heat counts: 45 A warms the cell, and in a tight pack the temperature rises faster than with free air circulation. Internal resistance and voltage sag grow with the cycles. Molicel cells are often counterfeited, so buy only from reputable dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
