The Molicel INR-21700-M65A is a high-energy round cell in the 21700 format from Molicel (E-One Moli Energy Corp.), a maker based in Taipei, Taiwan. It is intended for medium multicopters that are to fly long at moderate current. The format 21700 stands for 21 mm diameter and 70 mm length.

The cell stores 6,500 mAh at 3.6 V nominal voltage, which is 23.4 Wh, at 322 Wh/kg and 943 Wh/l. For current, the manufacturer's page gives 26 A as discharge current without expressly stating it as a continuous current; it should therefore not be compared with continuous ratings of other cells. Taken as continuous current it would correspond to 4C. The energy density is a cell figure, not a pack figure: connectors, holders and electronics of the finished pack lower it.

Six cells in series (6S1P) come to 140.4 Wh and so lie between the IATA limits of 100 and 160 Wh; there the airline must agree to carriage of spare batteries, and a 6S2P pack with 280.8 Wh exceeds the upper limit of 160 Wh. Lithium cells must also meet the tests of UN 38.3. Joining them into a pack belongs in a specialist workshop with test and protection equipment.

When choosing, what decides is whether the hover current is small enough for an energy cell: the more capacity per cell, the lower the current capability usually is. Cycle life and internal resistance are best confirmed with the manufacturer; Molicel data sheets are available through a contact form. High-grade cells are often counterfeited, so buy only from reputable dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
