Someca (Société de Mécanique de la Seine) was founded in 1953 as an offshoot of carmaker Simca, which took over the farm machinery division of the firm MAP. Someca's first tractor, the DA 50, was still closely based on MAP's DR3 model; the SOM series covers the independent designs that followed, up to the switch to Fiat technology in 1965.

The register lists 26 live models, from the BISOMTRAC through the SOM-25 to the SOM-40 B, built between 1957 and 1965. Output ranges from 14.7 to 45.6 kW, weight from 930 to 4,500 kg, displacement from 1,135 to 4,397 cm3 across two- and four-cylinder engines.

The series' commercial high point was the SOM 40, launched in 1957: it became one of the most widely built French tractors of its era and helped give Someca a strong market position, before Fiat, as majority shareholder, took over model development with the Series 15 from 1965.

Anyone looking at a SOM-series tractor is looking at Someca's last purely French design generation before full Fiat-licensed production.

Alongside the predominantly diesel engines, the register also lists petrol engines on individual SOM models, not unusual in post-war France when diesel fuel was not reliably available everywhere. On a petrol model, servicing differs fundamentally from the diesel versions: a carburettor and ignition system instead of an injection pump and glow-plug system, which steers the parts search in a different direction when buying used.
