The R series was the core tractor line of the Hanover-based manufacturer Hanomag and was built in numerous variants from 1942 to 1964. According to the register, output of the recorded models ranges from 8.8 to 43.9 kW, with models rated in horsepower from 12 to 60 hp, using one- to four-cylinder engines with displacement from 511 to 5,702 cm³.

Recorded operating weight runs from 800 to 5,200 kg, wheelbase from 1,500 to 2,325 mm, and top speed of the listed models spans 8.5 to 25.2 km/h. Later models such as the R 442 Brillant already carried the name of the later standalone Brillant series.

In 1971 Hanomag sold its agricultural machinery business to Massey Ferguson, marking the end of independent Hanomag tractor production. For a used R model, the exact type designation matters most, as engine and body style differ considerably across this long production run.

The entire production run of the R series, from 1942 to 1964, predates any EU emissions certification, which only began in 1999. With output up to 43.9 kW, the three-point hitch stayed consistently within category I under ISO 730, and the PTO mostly ran single-speed at 540 rpm. Original parts for the R series are likewise scarce today, since Hanomag tractor production has not existed since 1971; they are mainly sourced through specialist vintage-machinery dealers.
