The Isuzu Gala Mio is a midi coach that Isuzu builds through the J-Bus joint venture. The register lists the first generation for 1999 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The first generation's type code is KK-LR233E1/J1, and it ran from 1999 to 2004.

The Gala Mio replaced the Isuzu Journey-K in its intercity version in 1999. The Journey-K had been built as a midibus from 1984 to 1999; its city-bus version was replaced the same year by the Erga Mio. The Gala Mio is offered only as a coach and comes in the trim levels M-I, M-II and M-III.

With the second generation from 2004 the origin of the vehicle changed: it is a rebadged Hino Melpha and carries type codes such as PB-RR7JJAJ (2004), BDG-RR7JJBJ (2007) and SDG-RR7JJCJ (2011). The 1999 model thus represents the independently developed phase of the line.

Isuzu – other buses and coaches: the collective page outside the named ranges, from the compact Journey through the Gala and Erga to the Cubic and Super Cruiser, Japanese city- and intercity-bus programmes

This page gathers the Isuzu buses and coaches the register could not assign to a named range, from the compact Journey through the intercity coach Gala to the large city bus Erga and the older Cubic range. Isuzu Motors of Tokyo, operating under this name since 1937 and one of the world's major commercial-vehicle makers, builds buses in its own plants and through its subsidiary J-Bus, a joint venture with Hino; Erga and Erga Mio are low-floor city buses, Gala and Gala Mio coaches, Journey, Journey-K and Journey-Q lighter bus ranges, and Cubic and Super Cruiser older city-bus and coach ranges from before J-Bus was formed.

The register lists here 11 versions of these ranges, from the older-design Cubic and Super Cruiser through the Journey, Journey-K and Journey-Q to the Erga, Erga Mio, Gala and Gala Mio.

Isuzu buses are widespread chiefly in Japan and Southeast Asia, where the Erga and Gala are a familiar sight as city and intercity buses, while older ranges such as the Cubic and Super Cruiser have largely been replaced by the J-Bus successors; outside Asia, Isuzu buses are rarer and mostly found as re-imports or in former areas of Japanese influence.

On a used Isuzu bus, operating hours and the maintenance history of the diesel engine, the condition of the transmission and braking system, rust on the floor structure and door mechanism of city buses, and the condition of the interior fittings and air conditioning on coaches count; parts run through Isuzu and, on the J-Bus models, partly through the Hino network as well.

Production years: 1999.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
