The 3610 from Ford is part of the 10er series. Production: 1981–1983. The engine delivers 47 hp (34.6 kW), has 3 cylinders, with a displacement of 3,141 cm³. Torque is 179.5 Nm. Rated speed is 2,000 rpm. The machine is 3,250 mm long, 1,640 mm wide and 2,150 mm high. The unladen weight is 2,420 kg. The wheelbase measures 1,925 mm. Ground clearance is 315 mm. Top speed is 30 km/h. Transmission: 8 V/4 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 6.00-16 ASF, rear 12.4-32 AS. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 111.78 mm. The stroke is 106.68 mm. The compression ratio is 16.3:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,240 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). Its predecessor was the Ford 3600. It was succeeded by the Ford 3610 II. The 10 er-Baureihe series covers 12 models. Rated output within it ranges from 41 to 110 hp; the 3610 sits at the bottom of that range with 47 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 2910 below it with 41 hp and the 4110 (A) above it with 54 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,804 to 4,430 kg; here the 3610 sits in the lower part of that range with 2,420 kg. 5516 Ford models across 101 series are on record.

Ford 10 series (1981–1991) – 2610 to 8210 from Basildon: the last pure Ford generation, Force II, the number as size class plus 10, (A) for four-wheel drive, 30 to 81 kW

The 10 series was Ford's last tractor programme before the merger with New Holland in 1991 and the range that still shapes the Basildon plant in Essex today: in 1981 it replaced the 600 models, and in 1985 Force II brought the revised generation with the Super Q cab, regarded as one of the quietest of its time. The type logic continues the Ford tradition: the first digit gives the size class as since 1965 – 2 for the small tractor, 3 and 4 for the mid-range, 5 to 8 for the large – the 10 the series; 2610 and 2910 are the three-cylinders, 4610 and 4110 the four-cylinder standard tractors, 6610 to 7710 the six-cylinders, 7810 the 100 hp non-turbo six that became a classic, 8210 the top. (A) marks four-wheel drive.

The register lists 12 versions with 30.2 to 80.9 kW (41 to 110 hp), 2,862 to 6,582 cm³ with three to six cylinders, torque from 154 to 399 Nm, unladen weights from 1,804 to 4,430 kg, lengths from 3,250 to 4,585 mm, widths from 1,640 to 1,955 mm and heights from 2,100 to 2,911 mm – all diesel.

The 10s were Britain's best-selling tractors of the 1980s and common across Europe; the 7810 with the 6.6-litre naturally aspirated engine is still regarded as one of the most popular used tractors because engine and transmission are considered almost indestructible.

On used tractors, operating hours, engine condition, the transmission with Dual Power powershift step, hydraulics and front axle on four-wheel-drive models and the cab mounts count; parts are fully available through New Holland and remanufacturers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
