The YellowScan Mapper Ultra is a UAV LiDAR system from France for mid-sized multicopters that, with 640 m range and up to 7 echoes per shot, aims at surveying forest and terrain.
The range is 640 m. As point rate, YellowScan states up to 500,000 shots per second, that is, the number of laser pulses and not of points; up to 7 echoes per shot capture ground, trunks and crowns at once, which is decisive for forest surveying. The field of view is 75°. Accuracy is quoted as 2.5 cm. The system weighs 1,950 g without battery and 2,174 g with battery: anyone planning flight time and take-off mass counts with the value including the battery.
The weight of about 2.2 kg with battery counts towards the take-off mass of the aircraft, whose EU class limits are 4 kg (C2) and 25 kg (C3 and C4). The laser scanner is a laser device, and the laser class given by the manufacturer is to be observed. Point clouds of built-up areas fall under data-protection law, and the operator must be registered. Surveys of larger areas are often flown in the specific category.
Seven echoes pay off mainly in forest, where light passes through several leaf layers down to the ground. The range of 640 m applies to highly reflective targets; on dark surfaces it is shorter. Anyone comparing YellowScan systems with other makers keeps in mind that shots and points are different quantities. Quality hinges on the trajectory of the positioning system and a rigid mount. Wear points are the scanner window, the connectors and the damping; after knocks the calibration is checked.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
