The GBS 10/650 UAV from GALAXY GRS (Czech Republic) is a ballistic recovery unit for heavy UAVs of 35 to 65 kg. The canopy is ejected by a pyrogenerator. The unit measures 130 mm in diameter and 250 mm in length.

The rated value is the upper limit of 65 kg take-off weight. The system weighs 1,420 g. Motor cut-off (FTS) is optional: the manufacturer offers a motor disconnector as additional equipment, and in the test the electronics switched the motors off automatically on deployment. At 35 to 65 kg the impact energy is high even at a moderate sink rate, because it grows with the mass and with the square of the sink rate; for this class, minimum deployment altitude and sink rate from the manufacturer's data sheet for the real mass are what count.

Aircraft above 25 kg lie outside the EU classes C0 to C6 and the Open category; they are operated in the Specific category with a risk assessment (SORA) and an operational authorisation, or certified. In the test, release was by an impulse from the pilot. Where a recovery system is meant to reduce the ground risk, evidence to ASTM F3322 or EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512 may be required, and it is tied to the specific combination. The manufacturer names environmental testing to RTCA DO-160G.

The pyrogenerator is replaced after a deployment, and canopy and lines are checked for tears, heat marks and moisture. Pyrotechnic releases can fall under their own transport and storage rules; shipping and storage of the 1,420 g unit follow the manufacturer's instructions. For selection, the take-off weight with payload must lie in the range of 35 to 65 kg, and the system weight is part of the calculation.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
