The GBS 10/150 UAV from GALAXY GRS (Czech Republic) is a ballistic recovery unit for multicopters of 5 to 15 kg. A pyrogenerator ejects the canopy, much like an airbag. The unit measures 100 mm in diameter and 110 mm in length.

The unit is rated up to 15 kg take-off weight. Depending on load the sink rate is between 3.7 and 6.1 m/s; the rated value of 6.1 m/s applies to full load. The minimum deployment altitude is 5 m, and 80 km/h is given as the maximum speed of the aircraft (VNE). The weight of 405 g is without carabiner and suspension; both add to the sum.

Motor cut-off (FTS) is optional: the manufacturer offers a motor disconnector as additional equipment, and in the test the electronics switched the motors off automatically on deployment. In the test, release was by an impulse from the pilot. For flights over people it matters whether a detection of a fall or abnormal attitude that is independent of the pilot also triggers the release. As test references the manufacturer names environmental testing to RTCA DO-160G and a report from a military technical institute of the air force; evidence to ASTM F3322 or EASA MoC Light-UAS.2511 and 2512, which may be required for flights over people, has to be considered separately.

The pyrogenerator is a consumable: after a deployment it is replaced, and canopy and lines are checked for tears, heat marks and moisture. Pyrotechnic releases can fall under their own transport and storage rules; shipping, carriage and storage follow the manufacturer's instructions. Selection follows the real take-off mass, because above 15 kg the system lies beyond its design.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
