The DroneBeacon db202mav from BlueMark Innovations is the small Remote ID variant for FPV drones, connected through MAVLink only and without a CAN port. Like the larger db201 it is a built-in module without a GNSS receiver of its own: position and power come from the flight controller. It weighs 2.6 g without the antenna and measures 26 x 26 x 5 mm, so it also fits compact builds.

It transmits over Bluetooth 4 Legacy and Bluetooth 5 Long Range as well as over Wi-Fi (beacon and NAN) on 2.4 GHz. Long Range covers more distance than Bluetooth 4 Legacy at the same power but needs a receiving device that understands that mode. The radio module is FCC and CE certified; that is a statement about the radio hardware, not about meeting the Remote ID standard.

The standards named are ASTM F3411-22a and ASD-STAN EN 4709-002. For the EU the module has to transmit to EN 4709-002 and carry an EU declaration of conformity; US standards alone are not enough. Direct remote identification is mandatory on drones of classes C1, C2, C3, C5 and C6 and, in the specific category, since 01.01.2024; drones of class C0 under 250 g are exempt. The module has to accept the operator registration number.

When choosing, the connection decides: anyone using a flight controller with a CAN bus is better served by the db201, while a free serial port is enough for the MAVLink board. Keep the firmware current, and route the antenna away from the 2.4 GHz receivers of the radio control link, not under carbon fibre. On FPV drones crashes load solder joints and connectors the most.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
