The DroneBeacon db201 from BlueMark Innovations is a Remote ID module for installation in mid-size multicopters. It speaks MAVLink and DroneCAN and runs the open-source ArduRemoteID firmware familiar from ArduPilot systems. It has no GNSS receiver of its own: it uses the position and power of the flight controller, which is why it weighs only 5 g without the antenna.

It transmits over Bluetooth 4 Legacy and Bluetooth 5 Long Range as well as over Wi-Fi (beacon and NAN) on 2.4 GHz. The combination covers several reception paths, which helps the visibility of the identification; whether a smartphone evaluates the Long Range mode or the Wi-Fi broadcast depends on the device. The radio module is FCC and CE certified. Of the NDAA requirements the module meets only Section 889, not Section 848, because the ESP32 chip it uses comes from China.

The standards named are ASTM F3411-22a and ASD-STAN EN 4709-002. For the EU the complete module has to transmit to EN 4709-002 and carry an EU declaration of conformity; certification of the radio module alone is not sufficient. Direct remote identification is mandatory on drones of classes C1, C2, C3, C5 and C6 and, in the specific category, since 01.01.2024; the operator registration number has to be enterable.

When choosing, the firmware matters: ArduRemoteID is under active development, so updates are important, and the parameters for operator ID and serial number must be correct before flight. The module needs a free CAN or serial port on the flight controller. Mechanically, connectors and cables are the wear points; the antenna must not sit under carbon fibre.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
