AM General – other models: military vehicles from the HMMWV/Humvee to heavy trucks of the M series, six- and eight-cylinder diesels, gross vehicle weights up to 22.7 tonnes

AM General, headquartered in South Bend, Indiana, grew out of American Motors' commercial-vehicle division and has built the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) since 1985, known in both military and civilian use as the Humvee; from 1992 the company also sold a civilian version, the Hummer H1. This page gathers, alongside the HMMWV variants M998, M1097, M1123, M1152, M1165A1 and M1167, heavier military trucks of the M923 and M925 series, which trace back to the commercial-vehicle traditions of REO and Kaiser Jeep, from which AM General emerged in 1970.

The register holds 26 versions here with six- and eight-cylinder diesel engines from 6,173 to 14,011 cc, kerb weights from 2,480 to 10,723 kg, gross vehicle weights from 3,450 to 22,679 kg, lengths from 4,600 to 8,300 mm and widths from 2,150 to 2,550 mm.

The HMMWV has been the standard off-road vehicle of the US armed forces and numerous allied armies since the 1980s; the heavier M series takes on transport and recovery tasks in military logistics. Civilian Hummer H1s and decommissioned military vehicles have a small but active collector and off-road following in Europe.

Used, on all vehicles in this class check the condition of the portal axles and transfer case, corrosion on the ladder frame, and, on former military vehicles, complete documentation of provenance and road-registration eligibility. Parts run through dealers specialising in military vehicles and US imports.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
