AM General, headquartered in South Bend, Indiana, grew out of American Motors' commercial-vehicle division and has built the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) since 1985, known in both military and civilian use as the Humvee; from 1992 the company also sold a civilian version, the Hummer H1.
