Aebi Transporter TP 20 to TP 88 and VT450 Vario – the Swiss mountain transporter from Burgdorf: the number as hp class, all-wheel drive, tipping bed and forage wagon for slopes, 18 to 80 kW
The transporter is the second Swiss invention of mountain farming alongside the motor mower: a low, all-wheel-drive vehicle with cab at the front and tipping bed at the rear that carries hay, manure, timber and livestock over tracks too steep and too narrow for tractor and truck. Aebi of Burgdorf has built transporters since the 1960s, and the TP range in the register is the programme from the 1970s into the 2000s: the number roughly gives the output in hp – TP 20 and TP 25 the small ones with two-cylinder, TP 35 to TP 65 the mid-range, TP 88 the big four-cylinder – S marks an equipment level, TP420 and TP460 the generation of the 2000s, VT450 Vario the transporter with continuously variable drive from the 2010s. The engines came from suppliers, two- to four-cylinders of 1.3 to 3.8 litres.

The register lists 10 versions with 18 to 80 kW (24 to 109 hp), 1,272 to 3,769 cm³ with two to four cylinders, rated speeds of 2,600 to 3,000 rpm, unladen weights from 990 to 3,450 kg, widths from 1,440 to 2,500 mm and heights from 2,000 to 2,300 mm – nine diesel, one optionally petrol.
On the slope the transporter replaces tractor and trailer: low centre of gravity, all-wheel drive with locks and the bed directly over the axles allow travel on gradients where a combination would tip; forage-wagon, manure-spreader and slurry-tank bodies make it the universal vehicle of the Alpine farm.
On used transporters, operating hours, engine condition, gearbox and all-wheel drive with locks, brakes (mountain vehicles are braked hard), frame for cracks and the bodies count; parts run through Aebi Schmidt and the engine makers.
