The MP8 is a heavy 12.8-litre inline six-cylinder diesel from the shared Volvo Group engine platform that Mack Trucks markets under its own MP8 designation; EPA certification runs through the group unit Volvo Powertrain, visible in the engine family code EVPTH12.8G01. The model designations combine the power rating in horsepower with a letter – for each of the three power levels, 415, 445 and 505 hp, the register lists three calibration variants marked C, E and M.

The register lists here 9 versions with 415 to 505 hp at 1,500 to 1,700 rpm, electronic direct injection and diesel fuel. The certifications cover model years 2014 to 2016. Maximum torque runs from 1,592 to 1,779 lb-ft (2,158 to 2,412 Nm) at 1,000 to 1,100 rpm – a high-torque curve typical of the 12.8-litre class for full-load duty in long-haul service.

The MP8 is the mid-range engine in Mack's line-up, between the smaller MP7 and the larger MP10, and mainly powers the heavy tractor units of the Pinnacle and Anthem ranges in long-haul and regional transport. Within the Volvo Group, Mack shares its technical base with Volvo's own D13 engines but calibrates the MP range independently towards Mack's typical pulling-power and durability targets.

On a used MP8, the service history of the turbocharger, the condition of the exhaust aftertreatment with SCR catalyst, particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation, and the mileage relative to overhaul history all matter; high six-figure mileages are not unusual on these engines. Parts and service run through the Mack dealer network.
