OM stands for Officine Meccaniche, founded in 1899 in Milan and known from the 1930s for its Brescia plant building light and medium commercial vehicles. The Lupetto ("little wolf") listed here was OM's compact post-war light truck, complemented by the 50/35 and OM40 types, whose numbers denote weight class and payload in hundredweight. In 1938 OM joined the Fiat group, and in 1975 its commercial vehicle division merged with Fiat, Lancia, Unic and Magirus-Deutz to form the newly founded Iveco.

The Lupetto and its sister models served the Italian market between light van and medium truck before the merger into Iveco unified the group brands' ranges. As one of Iveco's founding brands, OM historically represents the Italian commercial vehicle tradition of Brescia and Milan, alongside Fiat, Lancia and Unic.
When buying these historic chassis, key points are corrosion on the frame, cab and load bed, the condition of the mechanical brake system, and the tightness and condition of the four-cylinder diesel's injection pump. Spare parts for these model years are today mostly available only through specialist vintage parts dealers and clubs, as OM has not existed as an independent brand since Iveco was founded.
