Trailers of this class run in drawbar combinations behind tractor units or lorry chassis and take on containers, swap bodies or heavy loads where a single vehicle reaches its payload limit; the wide span from light to extremely heavy versions shows a range from standard to special-transport trailers. The container versions carry twist-lock fittings for the standard 20- and 40-foot sizes, allowing them to be used regardless of the individual container's owner.

On used examples, the frame and torsional stiffness, the condition of axles, steering axles and brakes, locks for containers or swap bodies, and a complete history of safety inspections all count; parts run through specialist trailer workshops. On the heaviest versions, the condition of the multi-axle steering linkage deserves particular attention, since repairs there are costly.
