The Maxxum MX was the second generation of the Maxxum range with which Case IH had repositioned the mid-range between 100 and 170 hp in 1990 – the MX of 1997 brought the new cab, the 16-speed powershift and the electronics with which Case IH took on the John Deere 6000 and New Holland TM; they were built in Racine, Wisconsin, for North America and in Doncaster, England, for Europe. The type logic: MX marks the generation, the number the hp class – MX 100 about 100 hp, MX 120 120 hp, MX 135 135 hp, MX 170 about 170 hp – Maxxum the range name. The engine in all models is the Case six-cylinder 6T-590 of 5.9 litres at 2,200 rpm – a Cummins B engine from the Consolidated Diesel joint venture – rated in steps to the six power classes; the register values of 5,883 cm³ in all versions show the one engine family.

The MX were the last independent Case IH mid-range tractors before the merger into CNH; in 2002 the MXM from Basildon followed as twins of the New Holland TM and the MXU as twins of the Steyr Profi, with which the range passed into the group's modular system.
On used tractors, operating hours, engine and injection pump, powershift (clutch packs, electronics, calibration), hydraulics and cab electronics, rust on cab and mudguards count; parts run through CNH and Cummins.
