The MX 150 MAXXUM from Case IH is part of the Maxxum MX series. Production: 1998–2002. The engine delivers 150 hp (110.3 kW), has 6 cylinders, with a displacement of 5,883 cm³. Rated speed is 2,200 rpm. The machine is 5,060 mm long, 2,500 mm wide and 3,026 mm high. The unladen weight is 7,370 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,850 mm. Ground clearance is 560 mm. Top speed is 30 km/h. Transmission: 16 V/12 R or 32 V/24 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 480/70 R 30 AS, rear 20.8 R 42 AS. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 102 mm. The stroke is 120 mm. The compression ratio is 17.5:1. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The Maxxum MX-Baureihe series covers 6 models. Rated output within it ranges from 100 to 166 hp; the MX 150 MAXXUM sits in the upper part of that range with 150 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the MX 135 MAXXUM below it with 135 hp and the MX 170 MAXXUM above it with 166 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 6,265 to 7,370 kg; here the MX 150 MAXXUM sits at the top of that range with 7,370 kg. 1222 Case IH models across 76 series are on record.

Case IH Maxxum MX (1997–2002) – the six-cylinder mid-range from Racine and Doncaster: MX 100 to MX 170, the number as hp class, Case six-cylinder of 5.9 litres in all models, powershift, 74 to 122 kW, 6.3 to 7.4 t

The Maxxum MX was the second generation of the Maxxum range with which Case IH had repositioned the mid-range between 100 and 170 hp in 1990 – the MX of 1997 brought the new cab, the 16-speed powershift and the electronics with which Case IH took on the John Deere 6000 and New Holland TM; they were built in Racine, Wisconsin, for North America and in Doncaster, England, for Europe. The type logic: MX marks the generation, the number the hp class – MX 100 about 100 hp, MX 120 120 hp, MX 135 135 hp, MX 170 about 170 hp – Maxxum the range name. The engine in all models is the Case six-cylinder 6T-590 of 5.9 litres at 2,200 rpm – a Cummins B engine from the Consolidated Diesel joint venture – rated in steps to the six power classes; the register values of 5,883 cm³ in all versions show the one engine family.

The register lists 6 versions with 73.5 to 122.1 kW from the six-cylinder of 5,883 cm³, unladen weights from 6,265 to 7,370 kg, a gross weight up to 9,500 kg, lengths from 4,675 to 5,060 mm, widths from 2,360 to 2,500 mm and heights from 2,970 to 3,026 mm.

The MX were the last independent Case IH mid-range tractors before the merger into CNH; in 2002 the MXM from Basildon followed as twins of the New Holland TM and the MXU as twins of the Steyr Profi, with which the range passed into the group's modular system.

On used tractors, operating hours, engine and injection pump, powershift (clutch packs, electronics, calibration), hydraulics and cab electronics, rust on cab and mudguards count; parts run through CNH and Cummins.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
