Josef Bautz AG, based in Saulgau in Upper Swabia, built compact tractors under the designation AL in the 1950s and 1960s; the number in the type roughly denotes the power class in horsepower. The company was taken over by Fendt in 1966, which then ended production under the Bautz brand. Like other compact tractor makers of the time, Bautz competed mainly on price and simple technology rather than engine power or comfort.

The register lists 3 versions with 8.8 to 17.6 kW (12 to 24 hp) from one- to two-cylinder diesel engines of 905 to 1,810 cm³ displacement. Unladen weights range from 1,085 to 1,375 kg, lengths from 2,345 to 2,905 mm, widths from 1,380 to 1,585 mm and heights from 1,500 to 1,640 mm.
As simple, affordable compact tractors, the AL series was aimed at smallholdings in Upper Swabia and southern Germany, at a time when many farms were only just switching from horse and ox power to motorised drive. A PTO and a simple three-point linkage were already part of the standard equipment, allowing the fitting of contemporary implements for tillage and harvesting.
When buying used, what counts is the condition and compression of the one- or two-cylinder diesel, clutch and gearbox, the tightness of the hydraulics, and corrosion on panels; parts for this rare brand are usually only available through Bautz specialists and donor vehicles.
