The C-385 A comes from Ursus. Production: 1975–1981. The engine delivers 76 hp (55.9 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 4,562 cm³. Torque is 251 Nm. Rated speed is 2,200 rpm. The machine is 4,180 mm long, 2,090 mm wide and 2,530 mm high. The unladen weight is 4,378 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,385 mm. Ground clearance is 400 mm. Top speed is 25 km/h. The tank holds 90 litres. Transmission: 16 V/8 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 12.4-24 AS, rear 16.9-34 AS. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 110 mm. The stroke is 120 mm. The compression ratio is 17:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,800 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The gearbox offers 16 forward gears. There are also 8 reverse gears. The linkage is category II. The PTO runs at 540/1000 rpm. Around 1.615 units were built. Rated output across the Ursus range ranges from 8 to 192.6 hp; the C-385 A sits in the lower part of that range with 76 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 902 below it with 75 hp and the 5714 above it with 79 hp. Rated output across the Ursus range ranges from 8 to 190 hp; here the C-385 A sits in the lower part of that range with 76 hp. 221 Ursus models across 12 series are on record.

Ursus — one brand, two licences, many relatives

Anyone looking at an Ursus rarely sees a purely in-house design. The brand's history is a history of licences — and that is precisely why parts are often easier to find than the production figures would suggest.

In 1965 the Warsaw plant began building the C-4011 under a licence agreement with Zetor in Brno. At its heart sat the S-4001 engine, the Polish version of Zetor's Z-4001. That kinship runs through the ranges: the later C-360, built from 1976 and in the programme until the end of 1994, used the S-4003, the strongest engine of that family.

In 1974 a second licence followed — the British one from Massey Ferguson, together with the associated production plant. Models such as the MF 235, MF 255 and MF 265 were then built in Poland with Perkins engines and became a fixture on many farms. The higher Ursus ranges with four-digit numbers descend from this line.

One remarkable long-runner stands out: the C-325 and its revised versions C-328 and C-330 — popularly the "thirties" — plus the C-335 export version, ran without interruption for 34 years until 1993.

When buying used it is therefore worth establishing the range's ancestry first. An Ursus from the Zetor line shares engine parts with Czech machines, one from the Massey Ferguson line with British ones. That decides where to look for components.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
