The Ursus 1014 is a four-cylinder four-wheel-drive tractor from the Polish maker Ursus of Warsaw. It was built from 1984 to 2009, a very long period, and is among the well-known mid-range tractors in Poland.

The engine displaces 4,562 cm³ and delivers 96 PS (70.6 kW) at a rated 2,200 rpm, with torque reaching 308 Nm. In operation that means enough pull for plough, cultivator and drill on mid-sized farms. The 16/8 gearbox with 16 forward and 8 reverse gears offers broad gradation up to the top speed of 25 km/h. The tank holds 130 l, the Category II linkage carries the usual implements, and the PTO runs at 540/1000 rpm. Four-wheel drive provides traction on wet soils, and 4,160 mm length, 1,970 mm width, 2,695 mm height and a 2,385 mm wheelbase keep the machine handy.

In the Ursus range the 1014 was a four-wheel-drive tractor of the middle line, used in Poland for arable work, forage harvest and haulage, and thanks to its simple technology it still works on many farms today.

Ursus — one brand, two licences, many relatives

Anyone looking at an Ursus rarely sees a purely in-house design. The brand's history is a history of licences — and that is precisely why parts are often easier to find than the production figures would suggest.

In 1965 the Warsaw plant began building the C-4011 under a licence agreement with Zetor in Brno. At its heart sat the S-4001 engine, the Polish version of Zetor's Z-4001. That kinship runs through the ranges: the later C-360, built from 1976 and in the programme until the end of 1994, used the S-4003, the strongest engine of that family.

In 1974 a second licence followed — the British one from Massey Ferguson, together with the associated production plant. Models such as the MF 235, MF 255 and MF 265 were then built in Poland with Perkins engines and became a fixture on many farms. The higher Ursus ranges with four-digit numbers descend from this line.

One remarkable long-runner stands out: the C-325 and its revised versions C-328 and C-330 — popularly the "thirties" — plus the C-335 export version, ran without interruption for 34 years until 1993.

When buying used it is therefore worth establishing the range's ancestry first. An Ursus from the Zetor line shares engine parts with Czech machines, one from the Massey Ferguson line with British ones. That decides where to look for components.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
