The AC series from Tadano includes the AC5.160-1. Production: 2023. The engine has 6 cylinders, with a displacement of 12,700 cm³. The machine is 14,400 mm long and 2,750 mm wide. The unladen weight is 59,750 kg. The wheelbase measures 8,180 mm. Top speed is 85 km/h. The gross vehicle weight is 60,000 kg. The machine runs on 10 wheels. The AC series covers 22 models. Unladen weight within it ranges from 21,750 to 83,675 kg; the AC5.160-1 sits in the upper part of that range with 59,750 kg. Its immediate neighbours are the AC 5.130-1 below it with 59,600 kg and the AC6.300-1 above it with 71,750 kg. Gross vehicle weight within it ranges from 22,000 to 84,000 kg; here the AC5.160-1 sits in the upper part of that range with 60,000 kg. 108 Tadano models across 7 series are on record.

Tadano AC – all-terrain cranes on a dedicated carrier: from the AC 3.045-1 City to the AC 7.450-1, 260 to 460 kW, six-cylinder engines, 3- to 7-axle carriers from 22 to 84 tonnes

The AC designation stands for Tadano's all-terrain cranes, built on their own road-legal carrier. They are produced at the former Faun plant in Lauf an der Pegnitz, which the Japanese crane maker Tadano took over in the 1990s and initially ran as Tadano Faun before the brand was unified to Tadano. The type logic is consistent throughout: the digit before the point gives the axle count, the number after it the maximum lifting capacity in tonnes – the AC 3.045-1 is a three-axle crane rated at 45 tonnes, the AC 7.450-1 a seven-axle crane rated at 450 tonnes. The suffix "City" marks compact urban cranes with a short wheelbase for tight site access, and "-1" the design generation.

The register lists 14 versions with 260 to 460 kW from six-cylinder engines of 5,883 to 15,259 cm³, gross weights from 22,000 to 84,000 kg, lengths from 8,470 to 18,100 mm and widths from 2,400 to 3,000 mm.

All-terrain cranes such as the AC range bridge the gap between pure construction-site cranes and road cranes: they drive to the site on their own axles and then work off-road without additional rigging or escort vehicles. Alongside Liebherr and the Manitowoc group's brands, Tadano is one of the major suppliers in this class, with the AC 7.450 in the upper capacity league used for industrial assembly and wind turbine erection.

When buying used, carrier and superstructure operating hours should be checked separately, along with the condition of the telescopic boom, hydraulic cylinders and outriggers, the validity of the crane inspection under the applicable regulations, and the tyres and brakes of the multi-axle carrier; parts and inspection records run through the Tadano service network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
