Steyr-Daimler-Puch – other models: the collective page of vehicles outside the named ranges, from the Pinzgauer 712 M to the Graz-built Puch/Mercedes G-Class (230 GE, 300 GD), 2,299 to 2,998 cc

This page gathers the Steyr-Daimler-Puch vehicles the register could not assign to a named range – the Pinzgauer as an independent off-roader and the G-Class built in Graz for Daimler-Benz, which ran in Austria under the name Puch G. Steyr-Daimler-Puch was formed in 1934 from the merger of the Steyr works, Austro-Daimler and Puch and was for a long time Austria's largest industrial group; the automotive division in Graz built the G-Class jointly with Daimler-Benz from 1979, its Austrian versions carrying the designations 230 GE, 290 GD and 300 GD. The Pinzgauer, named after the Pinzgau region of Salzburg, was created from 1971 as a military four-wheel-drive off-roader with portal axles and a central tube frame, the 712 M being the medium version with three axles. In 1998 Magna International took over the automotive division, and the G-Class has since continued to leave the same Graz line as a Magna Steyr product.

The register lists here 7 versions with four- and five-cylinder engines of 2,299 to 2,998 cc, unladen weights from 1,840 to 3,137 kg, gross weights from 2,800 to 3,500 kg, lengths from 4,400 to 4,930 mm and widths from 1,700 to 2,020 mm.

The G-Class remains one of the few off-roaders with a continuous ladder frame and three lockable differentials and, despite its age, is valued as one of the most capable production off-roaders; the Pinzgauer served the Austrian, Swiss and other armed forces for decades and is today a sought-after vehicle for expedition and off-road use.

On used G-Class vehicles, rust on the frame and wheel arches, the condition of the differential locks and the turbodiesel engines count; on the Pinzgauer, the portal axles, the central tube for corrosion, and the clutch and shift of the off-road reduction gearbox. Parts for the G-Class run through Mercedes-Benz, for the Pinzgauer through specialist military-vehicle dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
