Saurer was a Swiss commercial vehicle maker based in Arbon on Lake Constance, building trucks from the second half of the 19th century until the early 1980s, before the commercial vehicle division passed in 1982 into the NAW group founded jointly with Berna and FBW. Berna, a second Swiss maker based in Olten, had been part of the Saurer group since 1929 and continued to build vehicles under its own name; this collective page therefore includes Berna models alongside Saurer types. The model designations on this page range from plain letter-and-digit combinations to tonnage figures such as 5 Ton, and among them also appears the Finnish register class Avolavakuorma-auto (BA) for open flatbed trucks.

Saurer and Berna trucks served the Swiss transport, construction and municipal markets for decades and were also exported to Scandinavia and other European countries, which explains the Finnish registration among the models. As a smaller maker, Saurer competed with groups such as Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, scoring with rugged, easily serviced engineering.
Buying one of these older trucks used, what matters is the condition of the frame and cab, the tightness and compression of the diesel engines, and the state of the brakes and drivetrain; as both marques no longer exist, parts supply is limited and runs mostly through collector and classic-vehicle networks for Swiss commercial vehicles.
