Renault Magnum – the flat-floor cab of the top class: DXI in-line six-cylinders of 11 to 13 litres, 324 to 460 kW, electric since the E-Tech

The Magnum was Renault Trucks' flagship model from 1990 to 2013 (Renault Véhicules Industriels until 2002) and was built at Bourg-en-Bresse in southern France. Its defining feature was the fully flat cab floor, giving the driver full standing height – an unusual concept in the long-haul segment at the time. Type designations such as 440, 460, 480, 500 and 520 give roughly the engine power in horsepower, DXI denotes Renault's own in-line six-cylinder diesel engines, which replaced the older MIDR units in the 1990s. With the Magnum E-Tech, Renault Trucks now also offers a battery-electric version of the same cab shape. Renault Trucks has belonged to the Volvo Group since 2001.

The register lists here 39 versions with 324 to 460 kW from six- and eight-cylinders of roughly 11,000 to 12,800 cm³, gross weights from 18,000 to 27,000 kg and lengths up to 11,090 mm.

The Magnum was Renault's answer to the top models of Volvo, Scania and Mercedes-Benz in long-haul transport and remains valued by hauliers today for its cab space, even though the range has since been replaced by the Renault T.

On used examples, the condition of the DXI engine and injection, the condition of clutch and automated gearbox, cab mounting and sealing, and the braking system and axles all count; parts run through the Renault Trucks network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
