MAN TGE – the 3.5-tonne van built alongside the VW Crafter: 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, 103 kW, lengths of 6.1 to 7.7 metres, special conversions such as BE-Combi

The MAN TGE is a van that MAN has developed and built jointly with Volkswagen since 2017; technically it is largely identical to the third-generation VW Crafter, produced in Września, Poland. The TGE type designation follows MAN commercial vehicles such as the TGL, TGM and TGX; model names such as 3.140 or 3.180 state the weight class (3.0-tonne axle load) and engine output in horsepower. MAN traces its roots to Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg and has been majority-owned by the Volkswagen Group since 2011, which enabled the TGE cooperation.

The register lists 12 versions here with 103 kW from four-cylinder engines of a constant 1,968 cc, kerb weights of 2,280 to 2,910 kg, a uniform gross vehicle weight of 3,500 kg, lengths of 6,100 to 7,740 mm and widths of 1,940 to 2,400 mm.

The TGE extends MAN's range into the 3.5-tonne van class and is used, among other things, as a base for motorhomes, emergency vehicles and combi conversions such as the BE-Combi named in the model list; it competes with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and the Ford Transit. The cooperation with Volkswagen let MAN enter this segment, which the brand had not previously covered, without an in-house new development.

When buying a used TGE/Crafter, key points are the condition of the AdBlue system and exhaust gas recirculation, corrosion on the load floor and rear doors, and, on special conversions such as motorhomes, damp inside the body; parts are stocked by both the MAN and the VW commercial vehicle networks.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
