More machines from model year 1969

The 154 comes from Leyland. Production: 1969–1972. The engine delivers 25.3 hp (18.6 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 1,488 cm³. The engine comes from BMC; Leyland. Torque is 69 Nm. Rated speed is 2,500 rpm. The machine is 2,780 mm long, 1,537 mm wide and 1,892 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,032 kg. The wheelbase measures 1,702 mm. Ground clearance is 324 mm. Top speed is 25 km/h. The tank holds 31.8 litres. Transmission: 9 V/3 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 5.50-15 ASF, rear 12.4-24 AS. The model was built in England. The fuel is Diesel/Benzin. The bore measures 72.9 mm. The stroke is 88.9 mm. The compression ratio is 23:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,400 rpm. Construction: semi-frame construction. The gearbox offers 9 forward gears. There are also 3 reverse gears. The linkage is category I. Its predecessor was the Nuffield 4/25. The PTO runs at 540/1000 rpm. It was succeeded by the Leyland 235. Rated output across the Leyland range ranges from 25.3 to 101.4 hp; the 154 sits at the bottom of that range with 25.3 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 245 above it with 47.4 hp. Rated output across the Leyland range ranges from 28.5 to 100 hp; here the 154 sits at the bottom of that range with 28.5 hp. 134 Leyland models across 15 series are on record.

Leyland – other models: the collective page of tractors outside the named ranges, from the 154 to the 904XL and the export Panther and Tiger types, 18.6 to 75 kW, Leyland and Perkins engines

Leyland built tractors at Bathgate in Scotland as successors to the Nuffield tractors, after British Leyland was formed in 1968 from a merger of British car makers; this collective page gathers the models outside the named ranges. On many three-digit types the last two digits give the approximate power in hp, as on the 255 with around 55 hp or the 384 with around 84 hp; the Synchro suffix denotes a synchromesh gearbox, as seen on the 262 Synchro/2030. For export markets some models carried predator names such as Panther, Super Panther, Tiger and Super Jaguar.

The register lists here 35 versions with 18.6 to 75 kW (28.5 to 100 hp) from three- to six-cylinder engines of 1,488 to 5,657 cm³, unladen weights of 1,032 to 4,042 kg, lengths of 2,780 to 3,810 mm and widths of 1,537 to 2,360 mm; powered mostly by Leyland's own engines as well as SAVA, BMC and Perkins units.

Leyland tractors in the 1970s stood for British mass production of mid-size field tractors and competed with Ford, Massey Ferguson and David Brown for the same market; after the end of the British Leyland era, production at Bathgate passed to the Marshall brand, which continued the range.

Buying used, what matters on these tractors above all is the condition of the gearbox and clutch, the tightness of the hydraulics, and rust on the wings and bonnet; since spares for the British Leyland engines are limited, it is worth checking the cylinder head and injection pump, whereas far more parts are available for the Perkins units.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
