The MASSEY FERGUSON comes from Ferguson. Production: 1958. The engine delivers 24.6 kW, with a displacement of 2,080 cm³. The machine is 3,370 mm long and 1,820 mm wide. The unladen weight is 1,100 kg. Rated output across the Ferguson range ranges from 17.5 to 37.5 kW; the MASSEY FERGUSON sits in the lower part of that range with 24.6 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the TE35 below it with 24 kW and the FE-35 above it with 26 kW. Unladen weight across the Ferguson range ranges from 1,100 to 1,570 kg; here the MASSEY FERGUSON sits at the bottom of that range with 1,100 kg. 48 Ferguson models across 4 series are on record.

Ferguson – other models: British tractors outside the named ranges, from the TE-20 ("Grey Fergie") through the TED and TEF to the North American TO-20, 17.5 to 37.5 kW, Standard and Continental engines

This page gathers the Ferguson tractors the register could not assign to a named range – essentially the TE-20 and its close relatives, the most numerously built British tractor of the post-war period. Harry Ferguson, inventor of the three-point hydraulic linkage with draft control, began production in 1946 at the Banner Lane plant in Coventry; in 1953 his company merged with Massey-Harris to form Massey Ferguson, which is why some of the models listed here already carry the short-lived transitional badge FE-35. The type logic: TE stands for "Tractor England", the following letters give the fuel type – TED for paraffin/TVO, TEF for diesel, TEA for petrol – D at the end often marks the diesel version. The sister version built in Detroit carried the designation TO-20 and was supplied with a Continental engine instead of the British Standard unit. The engines of the British versions come from the Standard Motor Company of Coventry, which developed the overhead-valve four-cylinder specifically for Ferguson.

The register lists here 40 versions with 17.5 to 37.5 kW from three- to four-cylinders of 1,850 to 2,500 cm³, unladen weights from 1,100 to 1,570 kg, lengths from 2,760 to 3,370 mm and widths from 1,530 to 2,340 mm.

The TE-20 is regarded as one of the most influential tractors in history: Ferguson's patented three-point hydraulic linkage with draft control became a worldwide industry standard and is still found on practically every modern farm tractor; in Britain the "Grey Fergie" remains a fixture of vintage-vehicle rallies and the collector scene to this day.

On used tractors, the condition of the cylinder head and pistons counts (many engines ran for decades and were rebuilt several times), the tightness of the hydraulic draft control, the condition of the steering and front axle, rust on sheet metal, and – on paraffin versions – the state of the carburettor and warm-up switch; thanks to the large collector base in Britain, parts are widely available.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
