The Walksnail Avatar Moonlight VTX from CaddxFPV (Walksnail) is a digital FPV video transmitter with a 4K recording camera in the range 5,725 to 5,850 MHz. It works in the Walksnail Avatar system and is meant for small FPV drones that are to record high-resolution on-board video in addition to the live feed, for example for film footage.

Recording is in 4K at 30 or 60 fps, in 2.7K at 30 or 60 fps, in 1080p at 100 or 60 fps and in 720p at 60 fps; the top frame rate of 100 fps applies in 1080p mode. The bitrate of up to 150 Mbit/s refers to the recording, not to the radio link. For the transmission to the pilot the latency of 22 ms counts, not the recording resolution. The transmit power of 1,000 mW is the converted FCC ceiling of under 30 dBm EIRP, not a measurement. The transmitter weighs 38.5 g gross without the antenna.

In the EU the CE limit for 5.8 GHz is under 14 dBm, about 25 mW; 25 mW EIRP is allowed there without a licence. The 1,000 mW cannot be used in the EU, and ranges under CE are clearly below the manufacturer's FCC figures. Equipment may be operated in the EU only in the approved frequency ranges and power levels. For drones with a camera the operator registration duty applies in addition.

When choosing, the weight of 38.5 g counts: that is clearly more than a transmitter without a camera and suits only drones that can carry the load. Recording needs a fast memory card, which wears with continuous use. The transmitter gets hot when stationary and should not sit on the ground for long without airflow. Antennas are the most vulnerable parts after crashes, and the firmware of goggles and transmitter has to match.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
