The Walksnail Avatar HD Pro Kit from CaddxFPV (Walksnail) is a digital FPV kit of video transmitter and Pro camera for small FPV drones. It transmits in the range 5,725 to 5,850 MHz in the Walksnail Avatar system and needs goggles or a receiver of the same protocol. The kit is a complete package of transmitter and camera.

The picture is 1080p at 60 fps or 720p at 120 fps; the 120 fps therefore applies only in 720p mode, and 1080p at 120 fps is, according to the FAQ, planned only with a future firmware. The latency of 22 ms is the average delay according to the manufacturer. The manufacturer gives the range of “up to 4 km” without saying whether under FCC or CE; without conditions it cannot be compared with figures of other systems. There are eight channels. The transmit power of 1,000 mW is the converted FCC ceiling of under 30 dBm EIRP, not a measurement. The video transmitter weighs 17.6 g, the camera 9.5 g.

In the EU the CE limit for 5.8 GHz is under 14 dBm, about 25 mW; 25 mW EIRP is allowed there without a licence. The 1,000 mW cannot be used in the EU, and ranges under CE are clearly below the manufacturer's FCC figures. Equipment may be operated in the EU only in the approved frequency ranges and power levels.

When choosing, the ratio of weight to image quality counts: transmitter and camera together count towards take-off weight, in return there is 1080p at 60 fps. The transmitter gets hot when stationary and should not sit on the ground for long without airflow. Antennas are the most vulnerable parts after crashes, and goggles and transmitter need matching firmware.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
