The CUAV C-RTK2 is an RTK receiver based on the u-blox ZED-F9P for medium-class multicopters. Chinese maker CUAV designed it for mapping flights: it has a camera hotshoe and a shutter-release interface for PPK mapping, that is, correction of the position afterwards.

The receiver uses two bands and handles GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS and SBAS (L1C/A and L2C, L1OF and L2OF, E1B/C and E5b, B1I and B2I). For RTK CUAV states 0.01 m + 1 ppm horizontally as RMS, and 1.5 m without RTK. RMS is a spread measure covering roughly two thirds of the measurements; it cannot be compared directly with a CEP figure. Output runs at 20 Hz, and the raw data for post-processing at up to 25 Hz. The compass is an RM3100. Connection is through HS-USB, F9P-USB, UART and DroneCAN, plus the trigger connector. The unit measures 56 x 33 x 16.5 mm and weighs 39 g.

The hotshoe reports the instant the camera fires, so that in processing every image can be assigned an exactly computed position. This method (PPK) makes georeferencing possible with far fewer ground control points; check points remain useful for verification. PPK needs base data from the same period, from your own base or from a reference network. The EU classes apply to the aircraft: from C1 upward geo-awareness and remote ID are mandatory.

In use it matters whether the camera outputs its trigger signal through the hotshoe and whether the cable fits. The trigger lead and connectors are the wear parts, because they are moved at every transport. Anyone flying only real-time RTK does not use the hotshoe; for the compass, calibration after installation applies, and the antenna needs a clear view and a ground plane.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
