The CUAV C-RTK 2HP is an RTK and heading module with two antenna inputs for medium-class multicopters. Chinese maker CUAV aims it at users who want to determine the aircraft's orientation from satellite signals as well as its position.

The module receives GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS in several bands, on the first antenna input among others GPS L1, L2 and L5, Galileo E1, E5a and E5b, and BeiDou B1I, B2I and B3I. Behind that are 1,408 channels, so many signals at once. For RTK the manufacturer states 0.8 cm + 1 ppm horizontally, and 1.5 m without correction data; the ppm means 1 mm of added error per kilometre of distance from the base. The default output rate is 5 Hz, with 20 Hz possible at most. The compass is an RM3100; two antennas, CAN, UART and USB are listed, along with the DroneCAN, NMEA and RTCM 3.x protocols. The module weighs 40 g.

Heading from two antennas works independently of the magnetic field and helps where steel, current or a motor disturb the compass. The wider the antenna spacing, the better the heading: a position error of 1 cm corresponds to about 0.6 degrees at 1 m spacing. Legally the aircraft is what counts: the EU classes C1 to C3 require geo-awareness and remote ID based on the GNSS position. Manufacturers' accuracy figures can only be compared when the measurement type (CEP or RMS) is the same. Corrections come from a base, a radio link or NTRIP.

For selection it matters whether the frame has room for two antennas with a clear view and wide spacing. The spacing is measured and entered in the flight controller; a wrong entry distorts the heading. Upkeep includes compass calibration, checking both antenna cables for kinks, and firmware matched to the autopilot version.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
